The present invention relates to a liquid crystal aligning agent, which contains polyamic acid or derivatives thereof, and the polyamic acid or derivatives thereof is obtained by making diamine and tetracarboxylic dianhydride represented by the following formula (1) It is obtained by reacting at least one kind of tetracarboxylic dianhydride. By the liquid crystal aligning agent of this invention, the liquid crystal aligning film which shows higher liquid crystal orientation, can maintain a high voltage retention, and is excellent in reliability can be formed. The liquid crystal aligning film of this invention can be used especially suitably for a photo-alignment film, and the liquid crystal display element which has this liquid crystal aligning film can also withstand driving for a long time. In formula (1), R 1 is a linear alkylene group having 4 to 9 carbon atoms, wherein any -CH 2 - is optionally replaced by -O-, -CH=CH- or -C≡C-.
