The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of amorphous mesoporous and macroporous alumina comprising at least one step of dissolving an acidic precursor of aluminum, adjusting the pH by adding at least one basic precursor to the suspension obtained in step a) a step of coprecipitating the suspension obtained at the end of step b) by adding at least one basic precursor and at least one acidic precursor to the suspension, a filtering step, a drying step, a shaping step and a heat treatment step. The present invention also relates to amorphous mesoporous and macroporous aluminas with a bimodal pore structure having: • a specific surface area S BET exceeding 100 m 2 /g; • 18 nm by volume as determined by mercury intrusion porosimetry or greater median mesopore diameter; • a median macropore diameter of 100 to 1200 nanometers, inclusive, by volume as determined by mercury porosimetry; • 0.7 ml/ Mesopore volume in grams or greater; • Total pore volume of 0.8 ml/gram or greater as measured by mercury porosimetry. |
