abstract An object of the present invention is to provide an organic EL element having high luminous efficiency and excellent stability with little change in luminescent characteristics over time. In addition, there are provided a luminescent thin film containing a π-conjugated compound and a charge-transporting thin film used in the organic EL element, and a display device and a lighting device including the organic EL element. The organic EL element is an organic EL element having an organic layer including at least one light-emitting layer between the anode and the cathode, wherein at least one layer of the light-emitting layer does not overlap electron density distributions of HOMO and LUMO, and the Electronic transitions between the HOMO and the LUMO are caused by interspatial interactions within the same molecule and contain a π-conjugated aromatic ring comprising a π-conjugated system in at least one localized site of the HOMO or the LUMO Department of compounds.
