The present invention relates to secondary electrochemical cells comprising a negative electrode, a positive electrode, a porous separator separating the negative and positive electrodes from each other, and an aqueous alkaline electrolyte impregnating the electrodes and separator, and to methods of charging such electrochemical cells. The negative electrode comprises a current collector, a carbon-based storage material capable of storing charge in the electrode by forming an electric double layer (helmholtz bilayer), and a non-carbon-based H2 storage material that can chemisorb hydrogen and/or store in the form of a metal hydride. The positive electrode contains a current collector and nickel hydroxide and/or nickel oxyhydroxide. The electrochemical cell includes a housing enclosing electrodes, a separator, and an electrolyte. |
