The present invention provides methods for reducing alkaloids in plants, genetically engineered plant cells and products with reduced alkaloids. The method of reducing alkaloids in plants comprises down-regulating the expression of a nicotine biosynthesis pathway gene relative to a non-transformed control plant, wherein the nicotine biosynthesis pathway gene is an A622 gene comprising a group selected from the group consisting of The nucleotide sequence of the group: (a) the nucleotide sequence shown in SEQ ID NO:1; (b) the nucleotide sequence encoding the polypeptide having the amino acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO:2; and (c) encoding A nucleotide sequence of a polypeptide having one or more conservative amino acid substitutions compared to a polypeptide having the amino acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO: 2 and having A622 expression. |
