| abstract | A communication device performing device-to-device communication and a method of communicating using the communication device are disclosed. The communication device is configured to identify one or more of a plurality of predetermined portions of shared communication resources of a wireless access interface for transmitting signals representing data to one or more other communication devices, the plurality of predetermined portions of shared communication resources of the wireless access interface being divided into time units. The communication device detects whether another of the one or more communication devices is transmitting signals in the one or more identified portions of the shared communication resources in at least one time division unit, and if signals transmitted by another of the communication devices are not detected, the device transmits signals in the one or more predetermined portions of the shared communication resources in at least one time division unit, and then detects whether another of the one or more communication devices is transmitting signals in the one or more identified portions of the shared communication resources in at least one subsequent time unit after the collision avoidance time. If a signal transmitted by another of the communication devices is not detected for at least one subsequent time unit, the communication device transmits a signal in the one or more identified portions of the shared communication resource, the signal representing data transmitted to the one or more other communication devices. Contention between communication devices accessing the shared communication resource may thereby be reduced by combining a listening phase with a transmission and listening phase prior to transmission of signals representing data via the shared communication resource of the wireless access interface. |
