abstract In one embodiment, a confirmation system for confirming a position of a catheter inserted into a patient may include an elongate control element sized for insertion into the catheter. The control element has a proximal end and an element, and the validation element is coupled to the distal region. The validation element may be configured to detect the presence of a reference marker associated with the catheter and transmit a signal indicative of the position of the reference marker relative to the validation element. The control element may also be configured to operate the confirmation element along the length of the catheter. The system may further include a drive device coupled to the proximal region of the control element for controlling movement of the control element through the catheter; a controller associated with the validation element and configured to communicate with the validation element; and a signal conductor for conducting a signal between the validation element and the controller.
