abstract |
The present invention provides methods, systems and apparatus for automatically separating selected analytes bound to a magnetically responsive solid support from other components of a sample. The apparatus for performing an automatic magnetic separation procedure includes a mechanism for effecting a linear movement of the magnet between an operative position and a non-operative position relative to the container device. A container holding station that can temporarily store container means prior to moving said container to said apparatus for performing magnetic separation includes a magnet for applying a magnetic field to said container means held therein, thereby maintaining said container means in said container. At least a portion of the magnetically responsive solid support is drawn out of suspension before the container device is moved to the magnetic separation station. An automatic container transfer mechanism moves the container arrangement between the apparatus for performing magnetic separation and the container holding station. |
