abstract Methods for rapidly detecting the presence or absence of a SNP in a target nucleic acid in a sample are described. The method may comprise performing an amplification step, a hybridization step using a SNP specific hydrolysis probe comprising a hairpin structure biased towards the 3' end, and a detection step. In addition, SNP specific hydrolysis probes comprising hairpin structures biased toward the 3' end are provided along with kits designed for the detection of SNPs of a target nucleic acid.
