titleOfInvention | Nanocomposites, composites, articles comprising spherical fumed silica nanoparticles, and methods of making the same |
abstract | The present invention provides a nanocomposite material comprising spherical fumed silica nanoparticles dispersed in a curable resin or curing agent. The nanocomposite comprises less than 2 wt% solvent and less than 0.5 wt% dispersant, based on the weight of the nanoparticles. The present invention also provides a composite material comprising about 4% to 70% by weight of spherical fumed silica nanoparticles dispersed in a cured resin, and a filler embedded in the cured resin. Optionally, the composite material further includes a curing agent. In addition, the present invention provides a method of preparing a nanoparticle-containing curable resin system, the method comprising mixing 10% to 70% by weight of aggregated spherical fumed silica nanoparticles with a curable resin to form mixture. The mixture contains less than 2 wt% solvent and less than 0.5 wt% dispersant, based on the weight of the nanoparticles. The method also includes milling the mixture in an immersion mill comprising milling media to form a milled resin system comprising silica nanoparticles dispersed in the curable resin . |
