titleOfInvention Antimicrobial glass articles with improved strength and methods of making and using the same
abstract Described herein are various antimicrobial glass articles with improved strength and discoloration resistance. The improved antimicrobial glass articles described herein generally comprise a glass substrate having a compressive stress layer and an antimicrobial silver-containing region, each extending inward to a specified depth from the surface of the glass substrate. In some embodiments, the compressive stress of the compressive stress layer at the surface is about 500 MPa or greater, and the compressive stress decreases monotonically from the surface into the depth of the glass substrate. Also described are methods of making and using glass articles comprising forming a compressive stress layer and forming an antimicrobial by preferentially exchanging a plurality of first cations in a glass substrate with a plurality of silver cations in a medium comprising silver. Silver area.
