abstract A contact sensor and system for incorporation into clothing and other wearable items to monitor body surface activity. The sensor includes a contact membrane having a body surface contact area and one or more substrate layers of knitted fabric. The basal layer(s) are thicker over an area consistent with the body surface contacting area that contacts the membrane. As a result, the contact membrane is urged to form a raised outer surface that protrudes against the body surface.
