abstract The present invention provides anthraquinone compounds of formula I, such as compounds of formula II to X, and methods of preparing anthraquinone compounds of formula I. The present invention also provides pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of cancer, optionally in combination with an agent capable of reducing the oxygenation level of a tumor. In addition, the present invention provides options for combination with chemotherapeutic agents and radiation therapy modalities to enhance overall tumor cell killing. The present invention further provides methods for detecting cellular hypoxia in vivo and in vitro.
