titleOfInvention | Electrostatic ion trap |
abstract | An ion trap comprises an electrode structure comprising first and second opposing mirror electrodes with a central lens therebetween, said electrode structure generating an electrostatic potential such that ions are confined to several trajectories at a natural oscillation frequency, said confining potential being nonharmonic. The ion trap further comprises an AC excitation source having an excitation frequency f that excites the confined ions at a frequency about twice the natural oscillation frequency of the ions, the AC excitation frequency source preferably being connected to the center lens. In one embodiment, the ion trap includes a scan control whose mass selectively reduces the frequency difference between the AC excitation frequency and about twice the natural oscillation frequency of the ions. |
