abstract Disclosed herein are compounds, compositions, methods, and kits for detecting the pH of a sample using pH-sensitive fluorescent dyes. The compounds disclosed herein are novel xanthene-derived dyes comprising aniline moieties with one or more electron-donating groups, which are useful in in vitro or in vivo detection of sample pH. Also described herein are methods for preparing the dyes for use in the disclosed compositions, methods and kits.
