Described herein are rhein analogs that exhibit antiproliferative activity, inter alia, against cancer cells. In some embodiments, compounds contain flat or planar ring systems. Such ring systems are non-covalently bound to DNA complexes eg by intercalation facilitating compounds. In some embodiments, compounds contain a flat or planar ring system as described above and one or more substituents that are alkylating moieties, electrophilic groups, or Michael acceptors or contain One or more alkylating moieties, electrophilic groups and/or Michael acceptor groups. The compounds described herein may also contain one or more functional groups to improve the solubility of the compounds. |
