abstract Described herein are compounds and compositions characterized by the following Markush chemical formulas (I), (II), (III), (IV), (V), and (VI), wherein at least one terminal amino group is further passed Carrying groups of type (i), (ii), or (iii) for functionalization. Such compounds are obtained by reacting a terminal or internal amino group with an epoxide, acrylate, or aldehyde bearing a lipophilic group. The resulting amino acid, peptide, polypeptide-lipid (designated "APPL" in this application) is believed to be useful as a drug delivery system, including delivery of nucleotides, to cells.
