| abstract | Methods and systems are described herein for allowing a controller within a virtualization environment to control access to devices that are virtualized within hardware. For example, a NIC may be able to request rules defining how network traffic is managed at the NIC's virtual switch. In some arrangements, the NIC may transmit a query for matching rules to the proxy, which may determine whether it has a rule matching the request. If the agent does not have a matching rule, the agent can query the controller for a matching rule, and the controller can transmit the rule to the agent. The agent can update its rule store and transmit matching rules to the NIC. When a matching rule is received, the NIC can update the rules stored in its virtual switch and can process packets according to the matching rule. |
