abstract The invention provides a long-arc discharge lamp having a pair of electrodes which are arranged oppositely in an illuminating tube with sealing portions at two ends and each electrode has a structure that a front end portion which includes an emitter and is formed by tungsten is jointed at a front end portion of a main body portion formed by tungsten, so that arc generated at the periphery of the joint surface of the main body portion and the front end portion when the lamp starts can rapidly move to the front end side so as to prevent blackening of an inner wall of the illuminating tube, to prevent the emitter from diffusing from the front end portion to the main body portion, and further to inhibite metal sealed in as an illuminating material from moving to the front end portion. The diameter of the illuminating tube is gradually reduced from positions corresponding to front ends of the electrodes to the sealing portions, the diameter of a portion corresponding to the joint surface of the main body portion and the front end portion of each electrode is smaller than the diameter of the central portion of the illuminating tube, the main body portion and the front end portion are jointed through welding, a solid solution layer is formed between the main body portion and the front end portion, and furthermore, the partical diameter of the tungsten of the front end portion is larger than the partical diameter of the tungsten of the main body portion.
