The invention provide a lens-forming composition suitable for making silicone hydrogel contact lenses according to a curing method based on a spatial limitation of actinic radiation. The lens-forming composition comprises (1) 10 to 40 weight% of at least one hydrophilic amide-type vinylic monomer, (2) 10 to 40 weight% of at least one siloxane-containing acrylate or acrylamide or methacrylamide monomer, (3) 10 to 40 weight% of at least one polysiloxane vinylic monomer or macromer, (4) 0.1 to 1.3 weight% of a photoinitator, and (5) 0 to 5 weight% of a polymerizable UV absorbent or polymerizable potential UV absorbent, provided that the total amount of components (1) to (5) and any additional component is 100 weight%. If one or more methacrylate monomers (2) exists in a monomer mixture, then the total amount of all methacrylate monomer(s) accounts for less than 5 weight%, and the lens-forming composition is characterized by being able to be cured by an UV light having an UV- intensity of about 4.1 mW/cm<2> within a time period of less than about 100 seconds. |
