titleOfInvention | Method and system for reducing porosity of composite structures |
abstract | The title of the invention is Method and System for Reducing Porosity of Composite Structures. In embodiments of the present disclosure, methods of reducing porosity of composite structures are provided. The method adds an additive to a resin material to form an additive-resin mixture. The method combines the additive-resin mixture with reinforcing fibers to form a composite prepreg and, in turn, a composite structure. The method thermally cures the composite structure at a resin curing temperature in a heating apparatus under vacuum equipment, heating the composite structure to an elevated temperature above the phase transition temperature of the additive, and maintaining said elevated temperature for a sufficient period of time. The method lowers the elevated temperature back to the resin curing temperature to allow the additive gas to undergo a phase change to a condensed phase, resulting in a significant reduction in vacuum pressure, resulting in reduced porosity of the composite structure. |
