titleOfInvention | Internal combustion engines using hydrocarbon fuels |
abstract | An internally cooled internal combustion piston engine and method of operating the piston engine are provided having liquid water injection, a higher compression ratio than conventional engines, and an air-fuel mixture that is leaner than that of conventional engines. Here, the effective compression ratio of the engine is greater than 13:1. The engine can run on gasoline or natural gas and use spark ignition, or the engine can run on diesel-type fuel and use compression ignition. Liquid water injection provides internal cooling, reduces or eliminates heat rejection to the radiator, reduces engine knock, and reduces NOx emissions. The method of engine operation using internal cooling with liquid water injection, high compression ratio, and lean air-fuel mixture allows for more complete and efficient combustion and, therefore, better thermal efficiency than conventional engines. |
