titleOfInvention | Microbial Control of Injection Fluid Flow in Oil and Gas Reservoirs |
abstract | The present invention relates to a method of constructing a microbial plug in a hydrocarbon-containing geological formation that has been flooded with water, the method comprising: a) introducing a microbial inoculum into the formation, the microorganisms of the microbial inoculum: (i ) spores or in a dormant state; (ii) capable of forming spores; (iii) capable of decomposing cellulose or decomposing hemicellulose; (iv) being thermophilic, extreme thermophilic or hyperthermophilic; (v) unable Utilizes hydrocarbons as a carbon source; and (vi) is not inherent to the hydrocarbon-containing geological formation; b) simultaneously or sequentially will provide a carbon source that can be utilized by the microorganisms introduced in step a) but not by the native microorganisms c) exposing the inoculum to conditions that enable the microorganisms to enter an active growth phase within the constructed water channel; and d) injecting the inoculum containing as defined in step b) through the injection well An infusion of further growth medium of the invention is introduced into the formation; the invention also relates to methods of maintaining such plugs, methods of controllably varying the position and/or extent of constructed plugs, and to the plugs themselves. |
