abstract | Provided is a surface-coated cutting tool having excellent chipping resistance and wear resistance. The surface-coated cutting tool has the surface of a WC-cemented-carbide-made tool base coated with at least a hard coating layer that is 0.5 to 10 [mu]m thick and made of an (Al, Cr)N layer, wherein: pores and droplets are dispersedly distributed in the (Al, Cr)N layer; the area occupancy rate of said pores and the area occupancy rate of said droplets in an arbitrary cross section of the (Al, Cr)N layer are 0.5-1% by area and 2-4% by area, respectively; and, of said droplets, Al-rich droplets having Al content rates higher than the average Al content of the (Al, Cr)N layer occupy greater than or equal to 20% by area of the total area of droplets. |
