abstract A thin polarizing film with little environmental impact and excellent optical characteristics is provided. The thin polarizing film is produced by forming a polyvinyl alcohol-based resin layer (12) on top of a thermoplastic resin substrate (11) and has a thickness of 10 [mu]m or less, a unit transmittance of 42.0% or more, a degree of polarization of 99.95% or higher, and an iodine content measured by ion chromatography of 17.6g/(400 mm x 700 mm)or less.
