abstract | The present invention provides methods and compositions for detecting drug-resistant pathogenic bacteria and treating infections thereof. Also provided are methods for detecting oseltamivir-resistant influenza viruses by competitive binding assays using non-oseltamivir influenza virus neuraminidase inhibitors and oseltamivir carboxylate. The invention discloses influenza virus neuraminidase inhibitors coupled to sensors and used in the methods of the invention. Novel phosphonate compounds are also disclosed as neuraminidase inhibitors against wild-type and oseltamivir-resistant influenza viruses against H1N1, H5N1 and H3N2 viruses. The present invention also provides an enantioselective synthetic route to these phosphonate compounds via sialic acid. |
