The present invention provides a repellant for animals comprising, as an active ingredient, a compound that emits an odor that innately causes fear in animals, wherein the animal does not develop adaptation to the odor. The animal repellant contains at least one selected from the following as an active ingredient: a heterocyclic compound represented by formula (1) or a salt thereof; a chain thioether compound; and an alkyl isothiocyanate. In formula (1), ring A represents a 3- to 7-membered heterocyclic ring containing at least one heteroatom selected from a nitrogen atom, a sulfur atom, and an oxygen atom, and R and R are each independently hydrogen, a halogen atom, any A substituted alkyl group, an optionally substituted alkoxy group, an acyl group, an optionally esterified carboxyl group, an optionally substituted thiol group, an optionally substituted amino group or an oxo group are selected.
