abstract | Disclosed is a process for producing carbon fibers, comprising the step of bringing a supported catalyst into contact with a compound containing a carbon atom or carbon atoms in a heated zone, wherein the supported catalyst is produced by a process comprising impregnating a powdery carrier with a colloid containing the catalyst to support particles of the catalyst on the powdery carrier, wherein a specific crystal face is grown in the powdery carrier, and wherein examples of the powdery carrier include a powdery carrier in which the ratio (I1/I2) of the intensity (I1) of the strongest peak to the intensity (I2) of the second strongest peak both observed in X-ray diffraction analysis is 4 or more and a powdery carrier in which the ratio (I1/I2) of the intensity (I1) of the strongest peak to the intensity (I2); of the second strongest peak both observed in X-ray diffraction analysis is 1.5 times or more higher than the ratio (I1S/I2S) of the intensity (I1S) of the strongest peak to the intensity (I2S) of the second strongest peak both described in JCPDS. The carbon fibers produced by the process can be added to a resin or the like to produce a composite material. |
