abstract | Disclosed is a method for producing a polyvinyl alcohol resin that satisfies requirements (1) - (3) and is obtained by obtaining a slurry by dispersing a polyvinyl alcohol resin with a saponification of 97.00 mol% in water with a dispersed solid concentration of 5 - 20 wt%, carrying out a saponification reaction in that slurry at 30 - 60 DEG C using (a) an alkali catalyst other than sodium hydroxide or (b) an acid catalyst for the saponification catalyst and washing the solid content in water after that solid content has been separated out. (1) The total of the sodium component present in the polymer backbone and the sodium component present as an impurity outside of the polymer backbone is 50 ppm or less; (2) saponification is 99.50 - 99.99 mol%; (3) the polyvinyl alcohol resin contains 30 - 70 wt% water as a volatile component. |
