Disclosed are: a method for producing a lithium composite metal oxide; a lithium composite metal oxide; and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery. The method comprises a step of firing a mixture of a lithium compound and one or more compounds of M (M represents one or more elements selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt and manganese) in the presence of one or more inert melting agents selected from the group consisting of fluorides of A, chlorides of A, carbonates of A, sulfates of A, nitrates of A, phosphates of A, hydroxides of A, molybdates of A and tungstates of A (A represents one or more elements selected from the group consisting of Na, K, Rb, Cs, Ca, Mg, Sr and Ba). The lithium composite metal oxide contains nickel, cobalt and manganese, and has a BET specific surface area of 3-15 m2/g (inclusive) and an average particle diameter as determined by a laser diffraction/scattering method of 0.1 [mu]m or more but less than 1 [mu]m. |
