abstract The present invention relates to novel carboxamide compounds and their use in medicine. The carboxamide compounds are inhibitors of calpain (calcium-dependent cysteine protease). Accordingly, the present invention also relates to the use of these carboxamide compounds for the treatment of disorders associated with elevated calpain activity. The carboxamide compound is a compound of general formula (I), its tautomer and a pharmaceutically suitable salt thereof, wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3a , R 3b , R 4 , Q, Y, A and X has the meaning given in the claims and description. Specifically, the compound has general formula (Ia) and (Ib), including tautomers and pharmaceutically suitable salts thereof, wherein R 1 , r, R 2b , R 3a , R 3b , R 4 , Y and X have the meanings given in the claims. Among these compounds, preferably wherein Y is CH 2 -CH 2 , CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 2 , N(R y# )-CH 2 , N(R y# )-CH 2 -CH 2 or CH═CH - CH = compounds of moieties, said groups optionally having 1 or 2 H atoms replaced by identical or different groups R y , wherein R y and R y# have the meanings given in the claims .
