abstract | The present invention relates to a method for coating catheter balloons with the pharmaceutical agent paclitaxel and the biodegradable biopolymer composition shellac and optionally other components. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a paclitaxel and shellac coated catheter balloon obtained according to the coating method disclosed herein and the use of the coated catheter balloon for the short-time release of the pharmaceutically active agent paclitaxel for the prevention and treatment of restenosis, in particular restenosis caused by angioplasty. The coated catheter balloon can be used alone or in combination with a coated or uncoated stent crimped onto the catheter balloon before or after coating with shellac and paclitaxel. |
