abstract | Disclosed are: a process for producing a useful substance (e.g., a protein) on an industrial scale using a bacterium such as Escherichia coli in the presence of a surfactant; and a surfactant for use in the process for producing a useful substance. Specifically disclosed are: a useful substance production process, which can produce a useful substance by causing the useful substance to be secreted by a bacterium contained in a liquid culture medium into the liquid culture medium, wherein the liquid culture medium contains a surfactant (A) and the dry bacterium cell density in the liquid culture medium is 1.5 to 500 g per liter of the liquid culture medium; and a surfactant for use in the useful substance production process. In the useful substance production process, the surfactant (A) is more preferably at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of an amphoteric surfactant, an anionic surfactant and a nonionic surfactant having an HLB value of 0 to 13. |
