abstract Provided is a solar cell element in which the photoelectric conversion efficiency is improved by increasing the efficiency of trapping minority carriers generated in an internal region (bulk region) of a semiconductor substrate. The solar cell element comprises: a semiconductor substrate of one conductive type, including a first surface serving as a light receiving surface, a second surface positioned behind the first surface, and a side surface connecting the first surface and the second surface; a first pn-junction region provided over the first surface, the side surface, and the outer circumferential portion of the second surface; a first electrode of the one conductive type disposed on the second surface and adjacent to the first pn-junction region; and a first trench portion provided between the outer circumference of the second surface and an end of the first electrode and separating the first pn-junction region of the second surface along the outer circumference of the second surface. When viewed in a planar fashion from the second surface side, the shortest distance (Q) between the end of the first electrode and the first trench portion is smaller than the shortest distance (P) between the pn-junction portion of the first pn-junction region of the side surface and the first trench portion.
