A liquid-crystal compound which has general properties required of a compound, has stability to heat, light, etc., shows a liquid-crystal phase in a wide temperature range, and has a high clear point, satisfactory compatibility with other compounds, high optical anisotropy, and permittivity anisotropy. The liquid-crystal compound is a compound represented by formula (1). For example, R1 is a C1-20 alkyl; rings A1 and A4 each is 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, or 1,4-phenylene in which any hydrogen atom has been replaced with a halogen atom; Z1 and Z4 each is a single bond; L1, L2, L3, and L4 each is a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom; and X1 is a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom, -CF3, or -OCF3. |
