abstract Provided herein are compositions and methods for imparting hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) herbicide resistance or tolerance to plants. These compositions include amino acid sequences for mutant HPPD polypeptides, and variants and fragments thereof. Nucleic acids encoding these mutant HPPD polypeptides are also provided. Further provided are methods for imparting herbicide resistance or tolerance to plants, particularly resistance or tolerance to certain classes of HPPD-inhibiting herbicides. Also provided are methods for selectively controlling weeds in fields at crop loci and for determining, characterizing, identifying and selecting mutant HPPDs of the invention that confer herbicide tolerance.
