abstract The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of copolymers in a polymerization plant with semi-continuous operation, said plant comprising a polymerization reactor connected to a metering unit in which acid monomers are supplied and in the polymerization reactor polyether macromer and water. According to the invention: the acid monomer is metered into the polymerization reactor from the metering unit through the acid monomer metering supply line; the free radical polymerization initiator is introduced into the polymerization reaction before and/or during the metering of the acid monomer into the polymerization reactor A vessel such that an aqueous medium is formed in said reactor in which acid monomers and polyether macromonomers are converted to copolymers by free radical polymerization. During free-radical polymerization: a part of the aqueous medium containing the copolymer is continuously withdrawn from the polymerization reactor by means of a reaction mixture line which is connected to the acid monomer metering line via a mixing unit; During the metering, the recovered aqueous medium containing the copolymer is mixed with the acid monomer in a mixing unit and after mixing it is returned to the polymerization reactor by means of the acid monomer metering line.
