Provided is a phase difference plate which can be manufactured by a simple process and can suppress a decrease in light use efficiency. A phase difference plate (10) is provided with a phase difference layer (12) which is formed, being in contact with the surface of a substrate (11) on which trench regions (11A, 11B) are alternately patterned in a stripe shape. The trench region (11A) consists of a plurality of trenches (111a) each extending in a direction (d1) and the trench region (11B) consists of a plurality of trenches (111b) each extending in a direction (d2). The phase difference layer (12) has phase difference regions (12a, 12b) corresponding to the trench regions (11A, 11B), respectively. In the phase difference regions (12a, 12b), liquid crystal molecules (120) are oriented along the extension directions (d1, d2) of the trenches, respectively. Since the substrate surface is in contact with the phase difference layer, in other words, no orientation film is formed, it is possible to suppress occurrence of light loss. The pattern of the trench regions (11A, 11B) is formed by transfer using a pattern model by one operation. |
