titleOfInvention System and method for determining location via a network
abstract A system for determining position, frequency, and clock offset over a network using signals of opportunity transmitted by one or more transmitters whose positions are known. The system includes a base station receiver with a clock and known location that determines the distance to the transmitter, takes a sequence of samples of the signal of opportunity, and uses the time of reception, the time of transmission calculated based on the calculated distance, or both to Sequences are time stamped. The base receiver sends the time stamped sequence and optionally the calculated distance to the remote receiver. Given a sample of the signal of opportunity held and time-stamped at the remote receiver, the time-stamped sequence is associated with the saved sample and computed as the difference between the time of reception at the remote receiver and either Time Offset: The receive time at the base receiver and the calculated transmit time at the base receiver. The remote receiver calculates the position based on the time offset, and optionally the distance provided by the base receiver. The altitude of the remote receiver may be calculated as part of the position calculation, determined iteratively based on constraining the Z coordinate to mean altitude, or from the difference in air pressure sensor readings at the base station and remote receiver.
