titleOfInvention Sodium zirconium carbonate and basic zirconium carbonate and preparation method thereof
abstract A method of producing sodium zirconium carbonate is disclosed which comprises forming a mixture of zirconium oxychloride and soda ash followed by heating at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient time to form sodium zirconium carbonate. Subsequent washing and filtration steps further form part of the process of the invention. Also disclosed is a novel sodium zirconium carbonate containing about 2 wt % to about 5 wt % Na + ; about 44 wt % to about 50 wt % ZrO 2 ; about 12 wt % to about 18 wt % CO 3 2- ; and about 30 wt % ~40 wt% H2O or LOD. Also disclosed is a method of producing zirconium basic carbonate comprising titrating an aqueous sodium zirconium carbonate slurry to a pH of about 3.5-4.0 with an acidic reagent, wherein the sodium zirconium carbonate in solid form has a moisture content of about 15% to about 25% LOD. The method also includes washing the aqueous slurry containing the formed zirconium basic carbonate with water. Further disclosed is a novel zirconium basic carbonate having a minimum adsorption capacity of about 30 to about 35 mg/PO 4 -P/gmSZC; a minimum HCO 3 - content of about 2 to about 4 mEqCO 3 -gm/SZC; The Na + taken is about 1.5 to about 2.0 mEqNa + /gmSZC; and/or the pH of the titrated sodium zirconium carbonate is about 6 to about 7. Also disclosed is a process for the production of zirconium phosphate comprising treating sodium zirconium carbonate with caustic soda to form basic hydrous zirconia, which is subsequently heated and mixed with phosphoric acid to obtain acidic zirconium phosphate, which is treated with caustic soda It is titrated to obtain the desired zirconium phosphate. Also disclosed are novel zirconium phosphates and uses of the aforementioned zirconium-containing materials.
