The invention relates to the production of highly reactive isobutylene homo- or copolymers with Mn = 500 to 1,000,000 by polymerizing isobutylene in liquid phase in the presence of a dissolved, dispersed or supported metal-containing catalyst complex by using, as a catalyst complex, a compound (I) Z<n+> [MXa(OR)b]n- Lx (I), in which: M represents a metal atom from the group consisting of boron, aluminum, gallium, indium and thallium; R represents aliphatic, heterocyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon radicals, which are independent of one another, each have 1 to 18 carbon atoms and which can contain fluorine atoms or have silyl groups containing C1 to C18 hydrocarbon radicals; X represents halogen atoms; Z represents proton (n = 1), optionally substituted ammonia (n=1) or n-valent metal cation; ; L represents neutral solvent molecules; a represents an integer ranging from 0 to 3; b represents an integer ranging from 1 to 4, a + b being equal to 4, and; x = 0. |
