abstract DESCRIBED HEREIN HYDROPHOBIC POLYMERS CONTAINING VINYL AMINE, USEFUL AS PERFORMANCE ADDITIVES IN PAPER MANUFACTURING TO IMPROVE PAPER SMOOTH WITH LITTLE OR NO NEGATIVE EFFECT ON DRY STRENGTH PROPERTIES. HYDROPHOBIC POLYMERS CONTAINING VINYL AMINE ARE PRODUCED BY INCORPORATING HYDROPHOBIC FUNCTIONAL PROPERTIES IN THE PRIMARY AMINE PORTION OF POLYMERS CONTAINING VINYL AMINE, BY MEANS OF REACTIONS WITH REACTIVE HYDROPHOBES. POLYMERS CONTAINING HYDROPHOBICALLY MODIFIED VINYL AMINE CAN BE ADDITIONALLY USED AS BASE POLYMERS, FOR POLYMERIZATION WITH A VINYL MONOMER, BY MEANS OF A POLYMERIZATION INITIATED BY FREE RADICALS. THE COMPOSITIONS OF THOSE HYDROPHOBIC POLYMERS CONTAINING VINYL AMINE HAVE SHOWN IMPROVED SOFTNESS, A REDUCED COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION FOR PAPER PRODUCTS WHILE MAINTAINING OR IMPROVING THE PROPERTIES OF DRY-RESISTANCE PAPERS.
