abstract Variants of porcine interferon alpha (pIFN-α) are described herein which comprise a synthetic amino acid at selected sites in pIFN-α and one or two amino acid insertions at the amino terminal end after signal peptide removal. Variants of pIFN-α may be pegylated. Methods for preparing and administering these compounds to treat viral infections in pigs and the formulations comprising the variants are also provided.
