abstract The invention relates to a surgical microscope (1) for ophthalmology with a tube unit (5), which allows the observation of an operating area (7), in particular of a front eye portion by a microscope main objective (2). The surgical microscope (1) has an illumination system (10), which provides illumination light for illuminating the surgical area (7), in particular the anterior segment of the eye. The illumination system includes a xenon illumination light source (11) or a metal halide illumination light source for providing daylight-like illumination light. At least one block filter (22, 23) is provided in the illumination beam path (16) whose filter edge is located in such a way that illumination light in the UV range is filtered out and illumination light in the visible wavelength range is attenuated to an insignificant extent in order to reduce the phototoxicity of the illumination light to the human eye ,
