titleOfInvention Device for the combined measurement of arterial oxygen saturation and transcutaneous CO2 partial pressure on an earlobe.
abstract An ear lobe fitted sensor (1), comprising a pulse oxymetric arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) measuring device (18, 19) and a transcutaneous CO2 partial pressure (tcpCO2) measuring device (5, 8, 9), is new. An ear lobe fitted, combined SpO2 and tcpCO2 measurement sensor (1) comprises a pulse oxymetric SpO2 measuring device (18, 19), a tcpCO2 measuring device (5, 8, 9) and a sensor seating surface heater (15). Preferred Features: The pulse oxymetric measuring device comprises two LEDs (18) and a photodiode (19), for location at the same side of an ear lobe, and a light reflective surface for location on the opposite side of the ear lobe. The LEDs and the photodiode are located, facing the sensor seating surface, in a light channel-forming recess (20, 21) of a silver block (8) which is heated by the heater (15). The tcpCO2 measuring device comprises an Ag/AgCl electrode (8, 9) and a glass or metal oxide pH electrode (5). The sensor seating surface is formed by a perforated metallic reflective aperture, two or more perforations being positioned in front of the pulse oxymetric measuring device (18, 19) and one or more perforations being positioned in front of the tcpCO2 measuring device (5, 8, 9). Thermistors are provided for controlling the temperature at the sensor seating surface. The sensor is fitted on an ear lobe by a clip having first and second clamping jaws, the sensor being detachably and/or rotatably mounted on the first clamping jaw and an adhesive foil being provided on the second clamping jaw for sticking to the ear lobe. The clamping jaws are biased together for pressing the first clamping jaw onto the ear lobe at light pressure (less than 2500 N/m<2>) which has insignificant effect on the measurements. An adhesive foil is also provided on the reflective surface for sticking to the opposite side of the ear lobe.
