abstract |
The display has two parallel support plates (1,2) less than 10 microns apart and forming the cell with a frame (3). The cell contains the nematic crystal (5) which has a positive dielectric anisotropy and a chiral additive. The crystal is twisted inside the cell through between 180 and 360 degrees. The ratio of the layer thickness (d) and pitch (p) for the crystal lies between 0.50 and 0.95. The product of the double refractive index and crystal thickness lies between 0.60 and 1.40 microns and pref. between 0.80 and 1.20 microns. The crystal's twist is pref. c.270 deg. and its dielectric anistropy is greater than or equal to 5. |
