titleOfInvention 3-Formyl-4-methyl-2,6-dihydroxypyridine and a process for its preparation.
abstract The novel 3-formyl-4-methyl-2,6-dihydroxypyridine of formula I and its alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts are valuable intermediates for the preparation of dyes, crop protection agents and pharmaceuticals. The compounds are prepared by basic hydrolysis, with elimination of chloroform, of 3-( beta , beta , beta -trichloro- alpha -hydroxy)-ethyl-4-methyl-2,6-dihydroxypyridine of formula II or of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt thereof, the end product being obtained in good yield and virtually without impurities. It is a particular advantage that especially the alkali metal salts of the compound of formula I are stable salts, exhibit the reactions of a CH-acidic compound and can moreover be employed for the conventional carbonyl reactions at the formyl group. <IMAGE>
