abstract The novel tetrahydropyridine derivatives of the general formula I <IMAGE> in which R1 denotes an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 1-12 or a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 3-12 carbon atoms, which radicals can be interrupted by oxygen, or a phenyl (lower alkyl) or cinnamyl radical which is optionally substituted in a certain manner, R2 denotes hydrogen or a lower alkyl group, R3 and R4 independently of one another denote hydrogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy groups, halogen atoms up to atomic number 35, or benzyloxy groups, and R3 also denotes a trifluoromethyl group, a lower alk-1-enyl group, or a cycloalk-1-enyl or cycloalkyl group each having 5-8 carbon atoms, or R3 and R4 together denote the trimethylene or tetramethylene radical or 1,3-butadienylene radical, R5 denotes hydrogen or an alkyl group having at most 4 carbon atoms and A and B denote divalent saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals and B can also denote the direct bond, where A and B together always form 3 ring members and together with R5 have a total of at most 9 carbon atoms, and their acid addition salts have antidepressant activity. They are prepared by elimination of water from the corresponding piperidinols.
