abstract The agent for modifying iron and steel has the compsn. (wt %) 2.1-9.0 Mg, 4.1-22.0 Ca, 0.01-25.0 of at least two rear earth metals, 5.0-25.0 Fe balance Si. It contains pref. in addn. B, V, Mn, Mo, Ni, Cu and Cr in an amt. of 0.1-17 wt % together or singly and 0.01-17 wt % Al. The agent may be in the form of an alloy, or is a mixt. formed into a briquette. Used for the prodn. of spheroidal graphite cast iron, austenitic and ferritic cast iron, C steel and low alloy steel having improved mechanical properties. The agent does not give rise to fume formation, and to defects in the casting.
