titleOfInvention | Bonding and antimicrobial finishing of fibre fleeces - with aq. compsn. contg. epoxide, fatty amine, dicarboxylic acid and aminoplast |
abstract | Bonding and antimicrobial finishing of fibre fleeces is carried out by (1) applying an aq. compsn. comprising (A) reaction products of (a) an epoxide contg. at least two epoxide gps./mol., (b) a 12-24 C fatty amine, (c) a dicarboxylic acid HOOC(CH2)y-1 COOH where y = whole number 1-13 and opt. (d) an anhydride of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid with at least 8 C, an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with at least 2 C or an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with at least 4 C, (e) an aliphatic diol with 2-21 C and/or (f) a difunctional cpd. different from (a), (c), (d) and (e), reacted or mixed with (B) an aminoplast precondensate contg. alkylether gps., and (2) drying at an elevated temp. Esp. for treating non-woven fabrics made from a wide variety of fibres (glass, cotton, viscose, polyamide, polyester, etc.) to give finished fabrics with good mechanical properties and handle, good fastness to washing, solvents and shampoos, and good antimicrobial properties. Process is esp. useful for treating carpets, needled floor coverings, mats and air filters. Epoxide (a) is pref. derived from bisphenol A. The reaction prod. may be used in the form of a soln. e.g. in perchloroethylene or as an aq. emulsion, and applied to the fabric by spraying, dipping, foularding, etc., followed by curing at 100-160 degrees C (esp. 120-140 degrees) for a few mins. |
